At approximately 1:20 p.m. Wednesday, a single-vehicle crash occurred on West Allen Street near the City Cemetery. The incident involved a truck that veered off the roadway and overturned onto its passenger side after descending a steep embankment.
First responders arrived at the scene and began extrication of the trapped driver. Tombstone Marshal Jim Adams climbed through the brush to reach the driver and reassure him while first responders worked on extrication.
Because of the challenging terrain, City Public Works used a tractor to cut a makeshift road, allowing additional first responders to reach the site and assist in the extrication efforts. The driver was successfully removed from the vehicle and was subsequently airlifted to a Tucson hospital by LifeLine for treatment of his injuries. The driver, a 78-year-old male and the sole occupant of the vehicle, was conscious throughout the rescue efforts.
Authorities have stated that no criminal contributing factors are suspected in the accident.
City Public Works also had to bring in a crane to recover the overturned truck from the embankment back to the roadway so Cochise Towing could take the vehicle. Marshal Adams recognized the swift and coordinated response as an “outstanding collective effort” to ensure the driver received timely medical care.
