On June 27, 2023, a Tucson man, Ted Raymond Plotts, was involved in a collision at the Highway 80 Border Patrol checkpoint, just north of Tombstone, around 6:30 PM. The crash led to minor injuries for three Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents, who were subsequently transported to a hospital, treated, and released. The damage was so significant, the small building along the barriers and the canopy frame were destroyed, along with everything else in the car's path.
The Tombstone Marshal’s Office responded to the scene and arrested Plotts. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility were also on-site to conduct an investigation of the incident since it involved Border Patrol agents and their facility.
Plotts, 44, pleaded guilty to several charges, including aggravated assault with a vehicle, aggravated assault on a peace officer causing injury, and driving under the influence. His sentencing concluded with a four-and-a-half-year term in the Arizona Department of Corrections, followed by a maximum sentence of seven years of probation. Additionally, Plotts was ordered to pay a total of $115,988 in restitution, with $114,157 designated for Customs and Border Protection.
