Owenby Family Determined to Rebuild After Fire:

The Owenby Family has a remarkable lineage of Comanches, Cherokees, and Texas Cowboys which have called Arizona home for seven generations. These ancestors, driven by a desire for freedom, adventure, new beginnings, and the promise of tall grass, ventured off the Southern Plains and settled along the banks of the Babocomari River in southeastern Arizona. For generations, their homestead has been a sanctuary, a testament to their resilience and pioneering spirit.

In April of 2024, tragedy struck when a wildfire swept through the Owenby family homestead. The blaze claimed the life of the family patriarch and obliterated everything else. Three homes, with a fourth under construction, were reduced to ashes. Every photograph, every string of beads, every moccasin that had been cherished and handed down through the generations was lost. Artifacts that had withstood the test of time, bearing witness to the family’s rich history, were gone in an instant.

The devastation goes beyond material loss. The homestead was more than just a place to live; it was the heart and soul of the Owenby family. For generations, it was a refuge, a place where family members could find solace and support no matter what trials life threw at them. It was a sanctuary where children, parents, siblings, and cousins gathered for birthdays, holidays, weddings, and funerals. It was a place of comfort and stability, where a fire was always burning in the hearth, and a warm meal and a comforting embrace were always waiting. This home was the epicenter of their world, and its loss is deeply felt by every member of the family.

One of the destroyed homes was insured, but the coverage is insufficient and the family is still embroiled in disputes with the insurance adjusters. The immediate goal is to clear the charred rubble, a task that the insurance money, if it ever arrives, will barely cover. They dream of erecting a cabin in place of the lost homes, a new gathering place for future generations. They envision a place where grandchildren and their grandchildren can come together, share old stories, and create new memories.
