Remembering Jeff Collup: Honoring a Life of Service

WILLCOX, Ariz. — On Friday, the Elks Lodge in Willcox became a place of heartfelt remembrance as friends, family, and colleagues filled the building to standing room only as they met to celebrate the life of Jeff Collup, a Border Patrol Agent who passed away on New Year’s Eve. Collup, a beloved figure in Willcox and across Cochise County, was attending a New Year’s Eve celebration at the lodge when he suffered a medical emergency at just 49 years old.

Collup had only recently retired from the U.S. Border Patrol after more than 25 years of dedicated service. His career began on November 29, 1999, at the Douglas Station in Douglas, Arizona, before he transferred to the Willcox Station in October 2011. Over the years, his impact as an agent and mentor left an indelible mark on the agency and those who knew him.

One of Collup’s greatest passions was horses, a dedication that led him to serve as an instructor at the Kansas Settlement Horse Patrol Facility. In this role, he trained agents from the Tucson Sector and beyond in horsemanship, preparing them for the rigors of becoming Certified Horse Patrol Agents. His expertise, patience, and commitment to excellence ensured that each trainee met the highest standards.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Collup was known for his natural leadership and ability to inspire those around him. Colleagues fondly recall his mentorship and willingness to guide others, making him a figure of respect and admiration throughout the Border Patrol.

After retiring from the agency on December 28, 2024, Collup remained a member of the Willcox community, often frequenting the Elks Lodge, where he formed strong bonds with friends and neighbors. His sudden passing has left a profound void, but his legacy of service, dedication, and friendship was remembered during a celebration of his life.

Collup was laid to rest at the Sunset Cemetery in Willcox.
