A DPS State Trooper conducted a traffic stop on a white sedan in the parking lot of Circle K on Buffalo Soldier Trail in Sierra Vista around 9:30pm Wednesday, July 3rd. The driver fled from car, running into a neighborhood on Crestview Way. Sierra Vista Police officers responded to the scene and set up a parimeter looking for the suspect in pajama pants.
After searching the area, officers located the suspect hiding in a backyard on Crestview Way. Jeremiah Roberts, 25 of Phoenix, was charged with aggravated assault, human smuggling, and resisting arrest. His two passengers were turned over to Border Patrol.
On Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at approximately 9:13 pm, Sheriff’s Deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a white Chevrolet Camaro near milepost 312 on Highway 80 (north of Tombstone). The driver failed to yield and increased his speed to approximately 120 miles per hour while passing vehicles and forcing them off the roadway.
Sheriff’s Deputies and Tombstone Marshal’s Office continued following the vehicle as it was driving erratically on Highway 80. When the suspect vehicle approached milepost 305, the driver stopped and a male subject wearing camouflage clothing exited the vehicle and fled on foot eastbound. Once the subject fled, the driver of the vehicle continued northwest again driving at excessive speeds of up to 120 miles per hour while also turning the lights off and on.
While approaching milepost 302 W Highway 80, Department of Public Safety Troopers successfully deployed tire deflation devices, striking three of the four tires. As the vehicle stopped off the roadway at milepost 301, law enforcement units conducted a high-risk traffic stop.
The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, identified as 21-year-old Efren David Cosme Malohua of Mesa, was arrested and booked into the Cochise County Jail on felony charges of Human Smuggling and Unlawful flight and a misdemeanor charge of Reckless Driving.
Molohua remains in custody on a $50,000 bond.
On Tuesday morning, July 2nd, deputies stopped a black Chevy Sonic traveling northbound on Highway 80. When deputies made contact with the driver, it was discovered that he and his two passengers were in the United States illegally. All three were turned over to Border Patrol.
On June 27th, a Border Patrol agent from Douglas had his window smashed by a large rock. The agent was patrolling along the border when an individual on the Mexico side threw a rock, hitting the agent’s truck.
In the last week, there have been over fifteen arrests related to human smuggling. Most of them resulted in the drivers fleeing law enforcement.
Around 5:45am Thursday, June 27th, a deputy with the Tombstone Marshals Office observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed entering Tombstone on Highway 80.
The vehicle fled when the deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The vehicle traveled down Charleston Road into Sierra Vista. Spike strips were deployed on Charleston Rd, but the vehicle continued onto Martin Luther King Jr Parkway before turning into Walmart. The driver briefly traveled west in the eastbound lanes on the Bypass before crossing back over to the westbound lanes.
The driver attempted to make a right turn towards the closed gate at the intersection of 7th St and Highway 90 Bypass and wrecked. The driver bailed out from the vehicle and was apprehended by Sierra Vista Police Department officers assisting. The vehicle had been reported as stolen.
The driver, 18 year old Dashawn Smith from Phoenix, was arrested on charges of human smuggling, fleeing law enforcement, endangerment and reckless driving. The accomplice, 16 year old Jarrett Ojomoh of Sun City, was charged with human smuggling and car theft. The four other passengers were turned over to Border Patrol.
