SWAT TEAM RAIDS BENSON HOUSE

At 12:30 pm on July 18, 2024, the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team executed a high-risk search warrant at a residence in the 500 block of E 6th Street in Benson. The warrant was part of an ongoing investigation into a felony offense.

The individual of interest, Alger Hellard, 57, was found at the residence and taken into custody without incident. During the search, evidence relevant to the felony charges was recovered.

Hellard has been charged with continuous sexual abuse of a minor and possession of a weapon by a prohibited possessor. Following his arrest, he was booked into the Cochise County Jail.

The Benson Police Department expressed its gratitude for the support and collaboration of the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office in this operation.

Hellard was previously sentenced to eight years in prison for manslaughter following the death of Tammy Hellard, 35, after her body was found at a home in Mescal in 2009. The shooting incident reportedly stemmed from a physical argument. The two allegedly fell to the ground causing the gun to go off, and Tammy Hellard was shot in the head. At the time, a one year old child was placed in the care of Child Protective Services.
