WILLCOX, Ariz. — For the first time in over four decades, the Willcox High School track is receiving a full-scale rebuild, bringing much-needed upgrades to a facility that has long fallen into disrepair. Superintendent Kevin Davis of Willcox Unified School District confirmed that the track, originally constructed in the early 1980s, had only been resurfaced once and had seen no major reconstruction during his 13-year tenure. Very soon, the new track and football field will be ready to welcome student athletes.

The deteriorating condition of the track, compounded by costly maintenance requirements, became a recurring concern among residents. Despite two failed bond attempts, the community approved a third, finally giving the school district the green light to move forward with several critical projects.
“The track was well beyond its life expectancy,” Davis said. “It wasn’t just a matter of patchwork. We needed a full rebuild.”

Thanks to the successful bond, the district has initiated a comprehensive upgrade that includes a brand-new rubberized track surface built to Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) standards. Once completed, Willcox High School will be able to host track meets for the first time in approximately 20 years—an important milestone for student-athletes and local sports programs.

The project also encompasses a new football field featuring fresh grass and a smart irrigation system designed to conserve water, as well as installation of a state-of-the-art LED lighting system, new bleachers, and a press box. The bleachers are currently being fabricated and are expected to be ready in time for the fall football season.

But the bond’s impact stretches beyond the field. It also supports upgrades to the school’s wrestling room, various classroom improvements, and the renovation of a multipurpose room at the elementary school.

Davis emphasized the district’s broader financial challenges, noting that aging school buildings are costly to maintain and that state funding falls short of covering critical needs. As a result, the district is actively pursuing grant opportunities to help fund roughly $40 million in long-term improvements.
“We’re excited to see this investment come to life,” Davis said. “This is a big win for our students, our programs, and the entire Willcox community.”

The new track and football field should be completed by mid-summer.
